the Kusu Trees which
survived the atomic blast on August 9, 1945 after being within a half
a mile of ground zero. The trees were stripped of their bark, burned
and defoliated by the blast, yet they survived. Members of the
Nagasaki Saint Paul Sister City Committee are bringing 1,000 seeds
from those trees to Saint Paul in May to present them to Como Park
Conservatory. The conservatory will germinate up to 300 of the seeds
and eventually grow one or two of them inside the convervatory. The
seeds are presented to Saint Paul from the citizens of Nagasaki in
honor of our 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship.
